Discrimination, whether from a teacher or classmates, can have a detrimental effect on a student’s self-esteem and academic performance. Personal discrimination can occur when there is a negative interaction between the student and the school staff. Students who are immigrants or those who do not speak English as their primary language might enroll in a good school but end up getting labeled negatively. Because of their accents, a teacher might assume that they are not good at English. Hence give low education expectations or believe they have nothing to offer the school community.

Schools located in high poverty areas tend to have less experienced teachers and fewer resources, which limits their chance of getting a high-quality education. This, in turn, affects their lifelong well-being and overall development. Besides, children who receive negative messages about themselves are less likely to achieve academic success.
Discrimination in education occurs when people around a student communicate their distaste for specific cultural values, language, or appearance. The child then internalizes the negative views and tries to change not because it helps them but also to please the other person. The parents to such students may also face discrimination when a teacher does not involve them in school activities or their child’s progress. This often makes it challenging for the parents to fight for their child’s rights.
Any type of discrimination is inhumane and affects students more, especially those of young age. It devalues an individual, diminishes their dignity, and affects their well-being.
Since people spend a vast portion of their lives in school, when they are discriminated against, they become more motivated to drop out of school or engage in rebellious behaviors. Zero tolerance in school can prevent unfair treatment of any learner regardless of culture, gender, economic status, and ethnicity.
